Balenciaga: Debuts Video Game Fashion Show

Demna Gvasalia, debuts his Balenciaga Fall 2021 collection in a new video game titled Afterworld: The Age Of Tomorrow released December 6, 2020 in wake of social distance restrictions due to covid-19. Fans can play the game on Balenciaga’s website.

The game takes players on an allegorical adventure, set in 2031, ultimately, creating a world of escapism and endless shopping. An array of diverse characters elegantly walk with a sense of entitlement on the runway, strutting Balenciaga’s Fall 2021 Collection.

In March the designer virtually showcased its Spring 2021 collection through a film titled, “Sunglasses at Night.

Fashion and beauty industries experiments with gaming aims to capture the attention of Gen Z and millennials gamers who are also beauty and fashion consumers. Caroline Kloster, a writer for L’official, a high-fashion magazine noted that “Luxury brands in gaming, is a more interactive path to exposure than an Instagram ad or a commercial.” 

Playstation, and Nintendo Switch sales skyrocketed, according to a new report from market research company NPD Group, found that video game content reached $10.2 billion in the second quarter, up 30 percent when compared to a year ago. Gains were seen across new physical content, digital console and PC content, mobile and subscription spending. Strong growth across Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One led to an overall hardware category sales increase of 57% to $848 million.

Covid-19 changed the fashion industry’s usual happenings. In fact, gaming has become the center of entertainment during quarantine lockdowns since early March. In wake of this reality, a slew of high-fashion brands ventured, including, Net-A-Porter, Valentino, Marc Jacobs and Anna Sui released signature character looks in the game Animal Crossing.

But 2020 has indefinitely shaken the industy. Louis Vuitton creative director, Nicolas Ghesquière partnered with popular game League of Legends, for the limited edition game “prestige skin.” The main character Qiyana can be seen wearing the brands jacket.
